Ybor City Medallions
Tampa, FL
Another project for the City of Tampa involved the creation of four, five-foot diameter medallions that depict the rich cultural heritage of historic Ybor City for installation on the new Interstate 4 highway bridges throughout the city. The medallions are a visual historical recording of the Cuban-American Ybor community. The intention of this project was to help in re-uniting a divided community. In the 1960’s, the Interstate 4 Highway, when installed, divided the Cuban-American Ybor community in two. Families and friends were separated by the barrier. Eventually the separation caused community erosion. Reference was gathered from museums, historical reference and meetings with locals in the community. The resulting art work I created was determined to be so successful, a second edition of the medallions was cast for West Tampa, another Cuban-American Community, and a new series of medallions has been commissioned for Westshore.
