Volume 1: Chapter 5 Notes and Corrections

                                                                                                                         updated 5/19/2020
Page 110
The text asks you to create a new file in 3ds Max, "lastname_bridgespan_01." The file should be named "lastname_gatehouse_01"

Page 113 / Page 114
The image at the top of page 113, Image 5.09 is incorrect. Image 5.11 should be where 5.09 is. The two images have been accidentally switched. Please refer to them in the reversed order so they match the text. The text is correct, the two images are switched. On the correct 5.11 image, there should be  five polygons selected on the right side (front and back)

Page 132 -
Image 5.42 says to use the "Insert" tool. It should be "Inset tool."  When you create the Inset (image 5.42), 3ds Max might create a “V” shape triangle at both ends of the row of selected Polygons. This is OK. What the program is doing by creating the “V” shape is to avoid creating a “T” intersection where the splines would have terminated.  Please continue to the next step.

Page 133 -
Image 5.45 Instructs you to “Select the top Edges, hold Shift-key and drag up.”  Do not hold the Shift-key as the image instructs. The edges will de-select. The text is correct, …using the Select and Move tool, drag the Z-axis handle of the gizmo up to create a peak.”

Page 136 -
The first paragraph and Image 5.48 instruct you to change the Z-Coordinate Display box value from 6.0m to 6.5m. This value is incorrect. The values for the Z-Coordinate Display Box should be to change from 5.0m to 5.5m. If you are having an issue with the step, you can use the Select and Move tool to raise the polygon in the Z -Axis using your visual judgement to find the approximate height as viewed in the image. The height is not a critical value.

Page 136 -
Image 5.49 instructs you to select the polygons shown and change the X-coordinate Box value to 1.0m. For some reason, the Coordinate Box displays might not be active. To resolve the problem you can use the Select and Move tool X-axis arm of the gizmo to drag the polygons the approximate distance judging visually in comparison to the image, or, you can switch to Vertex mode and select the vertices around the perimeter of the selection, which will enable the Coordinate Boxes for use.

Page 138 -
Image 5.52 and 5.53 are essentially the same image, the later having a close-up inset image.

Page 141 -
The text in the lower paragraph  instructs you to “Change the value currently shown in the Z-Coordinate Box to 5.0 meters,…” Try 4.75m if the results do not approximate the end position in the image. You will need space between the ceiling and the floor above for the ropes to hie in when the draw bridge is raised later in the chapter. This will be the center of the main entrance arch when we Symmetry the mesh.

Page 145 -
In the second paragraph, the text instructs you to "Add width to the drawbridge by extruding the side polygon 1.75 meters as shown. The correct value should be 1.50m.
After adding the additional 0.25m in the next sentence the total width of the bridge will be will be 2.0M.
